Michael Russell is Managing Director of The Russell Company, a real estate development, advisory and expert witness company.
Recently, Mr. Russell served as the development advisor (on contract) to the Saint John’s Health Center Foundation. In this role, he assisted Robert O. Klein, Vice President, in the preparation and implementation of a cutting edge, mixed-use, health care campus development plan.
This health care campus will include: a new 350-bed hospital; education and research space for the John Wayne Cancer Institute; medical office buildings; a health and fitness center; 300 residential units; (140-unit assisted living units; 156 units of town homes, condominiums and apartments) 30,000 square of health related retail; a child and family development center; and 3,500 car parking garage. Phase I is now under development. Mr. Russell has been involved in other medically related developments, including the development of medical office buildings for Midway Hospital in Los Angeles and the redevelopment of Provident Hospital in Anchorage for residential units.
Prior to joining Saint John’s Health Center, Mr. Russell served as Senior Vice President (long term contract) of Boeing’s 260-acre Douglas Park, a mixed-use community in Long Beach, including 3 million square feet of office space, 1,300 residential units, a hotel and 300,000-town center.
Mr. Russell was Vice President of Arden Realty, responsible for the development of Howard Hughes Center, a 70-acre, 1.9 million square foot, mixed-use office, 600 residential units, hotel and 250,000 square feet entertainment/retail project—The Promenade at Howard Hughes Center.
Before joining Arden Realty, Russell served as Vice President of Howard Hughes Corporation, where he was part of team that restructured $150 million of debt on Playa Vista, and sold a prime Playa Del Rey bluff site to Catellus Residential for a 114 unit luxury home community, which is now under construction.
Mr. Russell has completed over 300 assignments on such projects Irvine Ranch, Reston, Playa Vista, Illinois Center, Bunker Hill, Warner Center, Warner and Fox Studios to name just a few. For his own account, he has developed office, industrial, retail and residential projects. After working on Reston Town Center, it was selected by the Urban Land Institute for an Award of Excellence.
As the California Partner responsible for starting from ground zero to build an organization of 30 people responsible for the acquisition, predevelopment, entitlement, financing, construction, marketing, management and disposition of office, industrial and apartment properties.
As the Project Manager and Assistant Project Manager for the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency, Mr. Russell was responsible a staff of ten professionals for the development, marketing and redevelopment of the 136-acre Bunker Hill Urban Renewal Project in downtown Los Angeles; an expansion project for the University of Southern California; and two projects related to the Port of Los Angeles.
For the last 15 years, Mr. Russell has been a member of the Board of Directors for Community Corporation of Santa Monica (Non-profit developer of 1,400 affordable housing units.)
He received his B.A. in political science and Masters in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Southern California, supported by the Ford Foundation, U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and U. S. Department of Health and Human Service Fellowships.
